The illusion of the hat that changes color hurts our head

An unpretentious pom-pom beanie is currently the focus of a viral article on TikTok, as it apparently changes color from room to room. A TikTokker shared a video of a brown cable-knit hat that appears to magically fade to a shade of green, and a lot of people are completely baffled, including us.

Some TikTok users are calling this the next white / gold dress debate because people can’t decide on the actual hat color. Don’t know how colors work? Then check out our guide to color theory.

The TikTok published by OteliaCarmen has already accumulated more than 4 million views. In the video, Carmen says the reason the hat changes color is because of metamerism. According to ScienceDirect, “Metamerism is the change in color observed in a colored element due to different spectral emissions from different light sources,” so to put it simply, the color of the hat was affected by different lighting.

It seems the internet is just as confused as we are, and many responded to the hat that changes color in the comments section of the original TikTok. One user commented, “I’m just going to scroll because I don’t have time to think right now”, and another simply replied, “My mind is blown away.” There were also a few comments that tickled us; one user responded to the post: “Imagine having to explain the reason for the hat’s return”, and another gave a hilarious nod to the white and gold dress debacle with the comment: “I left this problem in 2015. I don’t have the energy anymore “.

Even Carmen, who purchased the hat, is unsure of the actual color, although she has checked her tag and tried to contact the manufacturers. This may well have to remain one of the great mysteries of the internet’s optical illusions. Want to create your own optical illusions?
