The modern artificial football pitch was created on land that had been used as a storage area since 2019 by builders constructing the new University of Sheffield Social Sciences building, off Whitham Road near Broomhill.
The Social Sciences Building was constructed on land that was previously used as football pitches until 2019 when two large sports pitches were demolished to make way for construction work on the new building. While one of these locations has now been built on the footprint of the new building, which is due to be completed later this year, the second was used as a storage area by construction workers over a period of approximately three year.
While work had started in 2019, it was halted in 2020 after a subsidence was discovered, meaning that construction work that had been carried out until then had to be resumed. However, land that had been used as a storage area has now been cleared and new land has been laid over the space, for the first time in three years.
It has been marked out with lines that appear to make it suitable for 11-a-side football matches, and is also subdivided with markings and goals for three smaller matches. There are also floodlights but it is unclear when the locations will be available.
