Paterson NJ Egg Platter Diner site: apartment tower rejected


PATERSON – The city’s zoning council recently rejected plans for an 85-unit, nine-story apartment building that critics say towered over surrounding homes in South Paterson and worsened traffic problems on the avenues Crooks and Getty.

The building is said to have stood along the border with Clifton on the property where the Egg Platter Diner once stood. The plans included street-level retail space, a three-story garage with 238 parking spaces, five floors of one- and two-bedroom apartments, and a rooftop meeting area for tenants.

Mayor André Sayegh expressed his support for the project. The mayor said on Wednesday he still believed the plans were viable.

“This will strengthen the dynamism of the region,” said Sayegh.

Tarek Jebara, one of the developers of the project, said on Wednesday that his group had not decided what to do next. The developers bought the property in 2017 for $ 3.55 million and then demolished the restaurant. The land has been vacant since.

The zoning council rejected the project at its December 2 meeting. During this session, Paterson’s planner Gary Paparozzi noted that other homes in the area do not exceed three stories. He said one of the goals of the city’s master plan was for neighborhoods to have uniform housing types.

Council members expressed concerns about the height and density of the shots.

“Why make it so high?” »Asked Mayra Torres-Arenas, member of the board of directors.

“We believe that something grand like this will really benefit the region,” Jebara replied. – You mean Paterson’s front door. It will be an iconic building.

The town of Clifton has sent one of its lawyers, Jamie Placek, to express its opposition to the project. Placek told the zoning council “a smaller structure would be more appropriate.”
