We are at the start of the next chapter for the Internet, and it is also the next chapter for our business.
Over the past few decades, technology has empowered people to connect and express themselves more naturally. When I started Facebook, we mostly typed text on websites. When we had phones with cameras, the internet became more visual and mobile. As connections grew faster, video became a richer way to share experiences. We have gone from desktop to web to mobile; from text to photos to video. But that’s not the end of the line.
The next platform will be even more immersive – an embodied Internet where you are in the experience, not just watching it. We call it the metaverse, and it will affect every product we build.
The defining quality of the metaverse will be a sense of presence – like you’re right there with another person or in a different location. Feeling truly present with another person is the ultimate social tech dream. That is why we focus on its construction.
In the Metaverse, you’ll be able to do almost anything you can imagine – getting together with friends and family, working, learning, playing, shopping, creating – as well as completely new experiences that don’t quite fit our way. to think. computers or phones today. We’ve made a movie that explores how you might one day use the metaverse.
In this future, you will be able to teleport instantly in the form of a hologram to be at the office without moving, at a concert with friends, or in your parents’ living room to catch up with you. It will open up more opportunities no matter where you live. You will be able to devote more time to what matters to you, reduce traffic time and reduce your carbon footprint.
Think about how many physical things you own today that might just be holograms in the future. Your TV, your perfect working setup with multiple monitors, board games and more – instead of physical objects put together in factories, these will be holograms designed by creators around the world.
You will go through these experiences on different devices: augmented reality glasses to stay present in the physical world, virtual reality to be completely immersed, and phones and computers to access existing platforms. It’s not about spending more time on screens; it’s about improving the time we already spend.
Our role and responsibility
The metaverse will not be created by a single company. It will be built by creators and developers creating new experiences and interoperable digital objects and unleashing a creative economy massively larger than that limited by current platforms and their policies.
Our role on this journey is to accelerate the development of foundational technologies, social platforms and creative tools to bring the metaverse to life, and to weave these technologies through our social media applications. We believe that the Metaverse can provide better social experiences than anything out there today, and we will devote our energy to helping realize its potential.
As I wrote in the original letter from our founder: “We don’t build services to make money; we make money to create better services.
This approach has served us well. We have built our business to support very large and long term investments to create better services, and that is what we plan to do here.
The past five years have been a lesson in humility for me and for our company in many ways. One of the main lessons I’ve learned is that it’s not enough to make products that people love.
I understand better that the history of the Internet is not simple. Each chapter brings new voices and new ideas, but also new challenges, risks and disruptions to established interests. We will need to work together, from the start, to bring the best possible version of that future to life.
Privacy and security must be built into the metaverse from day one. The same is true of open standards and interoperability. This will require not only new technical work – like supporting crypto and NFT projects in the community – but also new forms of governance. Above all, we need to help build ecosystems so that more people have a stake in the future and can benefit from it not only as consumers but also as creators.
This time has also been a lesson in humility because as big as a company as we are, we’ve also learned what it’s like to build on other platforms. Living under their rules has deeply shaped my perspective on the tech industry. I have come to believe that lack of choice for consumers and high fees for developers stifle innovation and hold back the internet economy.
We tried to take a different approach. We want our services to be accessible to as many people as possible, which means working so that they cost less, not more. Our mobile applications are free. Our ad template is designed to give businesses the lowest prices. Our tools of trade are available at cost or at a modest fee. As a result, billions of people love our services and hundreds of millions of businesses trust our tools.
This is the approach we want to take to help build the metaverse. We plan to sell our devices at cost or subsidized to make them accessible to more people. We’ll continue to support sideloading and streaming from PCs so people have a choice, rather than forcing them to use the Quest Store to find apps or reach customers. And we will strive to offer services to developers and creators with low fees in as many cases as possible to maximize the overall creative economy. However, we’ll have to make sure that we don’t lose too much money along the way.
Our hope is that over the next decade, the metaverse will reach one billion people, host hundreds of billions of dollars in digital commerce, and support jobs for millions of creators and developers.
Who we are
As we enter this next chapter, I’ve thought a lot about what this means for our business and who we are.
We are a company that focuses on connecting people. While most tech companies focus on how people interact with technology, we’ve always focused on creating technology so people can interact with each other.
Today we are considered a social media company. Facebook is one of the most widely used technology products in the history of the world. It is an iconic brand of social media.
Building social apps will always be important to us, and there is a lot more to build. But more and more, that’s not all we do. In our DNA, we build the technology to bring people together. The metaverse is the next frontier for connecting people, just like social media was when we started.
Right now, our brand is so closely tied to a product that it cannot represent everything we do today, let alone in the future. Over time, I hope we will be seen as a metaverse company, and I want to anchor our work and our identity to what we are building towards.
We just announced that we are making a fundamental change to our business. We now look at and present our business as two different segments: one for our family of applications and one for our work on future platforms. Our work on the metaverse is not just one of those segments. The metaverse encompasses both social experiences and future technology. As we broaden our vision, it’s time for us to embrace a new brand.
To reflect who we are and the future we hope to build, I am proud to share that our company is now Meta.
Our mission remains the same – it’s still about bringing people together. Our apps and their brands don’t change either. We’re still the company that designs technology around people.
But all of our products, including our apps, now share a new vision: to help bring the metaverse to life. And now we have a name that reflects the breadth of what we do.
From now on, we’ll be metaverse first, not Facebook first. This means that over time you will no longer need a Facebook account to use our other services. As our new brand begins to appear in our products, I hope people around the world will know about the Meta brand and the future we stand for.
I was studying the classics and the word “meta” comes from the Greek meaning “beyond”. To me, this symbolizes that there is always more to build and that there is always a next chapter in history. Ours is a story that started in a dormitory and grew beyond anything we imagined; in a family of apps that people use to connect with each other, to find their voice, and to start the businesses, communities and movements that have changed the world.
I’m proud of what we’ve built so far, and I’m excited for what’s to come – as we go beyond what is possible today, beyond the constraints of screens, beyond beyond the limits of distance and physics, and towards a future where everyone can be present with each other, create new opportunities and experience new things. It is a future which is beyond any business and which will be made by all of us.
We built things that brought people together in new ways. We have learned by battling difficult social issues and living under closed platforms. Now is the time to take everything we’ve learned and help build the next chapter.
