Fujitsu and SFC’s Keio Research Institute have completed a month-long trial of a self-sovereign digital identity for students that enables a wide range of identity-related services outside of education.
A press release issued by Fujitsu describes the intention to establish a self-sovereign identifier to solve problems related to the management of personal data, the fragmented storage of personal data on various sites which creates difficulties and data incompatibilities with other organizations.
To address the complications, Fujitsu says it collaborated with SFC’s Keio Research Institute on a digital identity technology in September 2021, which resulted in an identity conversion gateway that allows multiple identity infrastructures to be interconnected without using unified protocol.
The trial, which ran from March 17, 2022 to April 12, 2022, issued a digital student card through Keio University’s next-generation digital identity platform which was transformed by the gateway identity conversion tool to review identity-connected online services applications. platform that uses Fujitsu’s digital identity exchange named “IDentity eXchange”.
It all started with the creation of a meeting room reservation site by the Keio Research Institute with an anonymous response questionnaire connected to Fujitsu’s digital identity exchange technology. Questionnaires allow users to disclose only necessary personal information, much like a standalone ID. Then, the digital student cards issued by Keio University for the trial would be verified to release student credentials on the site by Fujitsu’s identity conversion gateway based on site requests and user selections. The Identity Conversion Gateway then matches and connects to individually managed certificate storage applications, such as digital wallets or other identity platforms.
Fujitsu is also developing vein recognition and other biometric systems that could be used to anchor digital identities.
The test results showed that students successfully authenticated to the meeting room booking site. Additionally, the digital certificate could be used as an anonymous questionnaire after user authentication, selecting partial items and site information from the questionnaire using Fujitsu’s confidential disclosure certification technology.
The success of the trial indicated to Fujitsu and the SFC’s Keio Research Institute that student information could be shared between different departments. Both organizations say it can allow users to link personal information provided by businesses, universities and local governments to various services. It can also be used to provide student discount services or help with job search and recruitment assistance after graduation, the press release suggests.
Fujitsu and the Keio Research Institute of SFC say that after the trial, the two launched the “Trusted Internet Architecture Lab” on April 1, 2022 as a joint research base for designing architectures and the development of technologies for the secure use of Internet services by taking advantage of the new digital identity technology.
The Trusted Internet Architecture Lab will run from April 2022 to March 2025 and will study issues such as R&D of new technologies for a more secure Internet, development of a reliable communication protocol, and design of an architecture.
