AMMAN, Sept 13 (Reuters) – Five people died on Tuesday after a four-storey residential building collapsed in the Jordanian capital and rescue operations were underway to find survivors, police said.

Reuters witnesses said civil defense workers were removing debris from the collapsed building to find survivors trapped under the rubble. About 14 people were evacuated from the rubble.

Prime Minister Bisher al Khasawneh, who had arrived at the scene, called for an immediate investigation into the collapse of the Webdeh neighborhood in the central part of the city.

Police cordoned off the area near the site as the crowd watched.

Officials said one of the reasons for the collapse was the dilapidated state of the building.
