You may know what WCER Technical Services can do when your computer won’t start, you need new software, or your password doesn’t update, and that’s important work. But that only scratches the surface of the different types of work that technical services can do for WCER projects.

With 12 members in total, Tech Services provides a comprehensive list of IT and creative services. Its qualified staff and state-of-the-art technologies can provide projects with research-oriented programming, application development and website design, as well as expertise in networking, multimedia and graphics. You can see many examples of the work done by Tech Services for WCER projects and other clients in this detailed and comprehensive document. wallet.

“If I could say one thing to PIs (Principal Investigators) at the center, it would be that we offer a wide range of services,” says Elizabeth Kraege-Soechting, one of four people involved in software application development in Technical Services. “Not only can we create a site for them or create an app for them, but as part of the admissions process, we will look at existing solutions that could save them time and money. If a custom solution is the right option, we offer reduced development rates for internal WCER projects.

Technical services colleagues can also help even if a project already has one or more technicians on staff. They can help these internal developers brainstorm and problem solve, and/or step in to do some of the work on a project’s required solution.

“We are also available to advise you on the technology offered by the university,” says Kraege-Soechting. “If we are not the right people to give you detailed help, we will put you in touch with the right people. We want people to see us more as a one-stop solution for their technology needs and to be the resource to help them connect with someone else if we can’t.

For the Kraege-Soechting development team in particular, the services offered include:

  • development of fully customized tools for research projects;
  • help on elements of an existing application;
  • support the improvement and maintenance of an existing application;
  • custom development integrated with existing or third-party tools;
  • data planning and management for analysis and reporting;
  • redesign/redevelopment of old sites into modern platforms.

Application development work handled by Tech Services for on- and off-campus clients includes WECAN, the Wisconsin Education Career Access Network, a job application portal used by more than 70,000 applicants for employment at K-12 schools in Wisconsin; and the WIDA online store, a type of e-commerce storefront linked to a custom CRM (customer relationship management technology) for selling WIDA educational products such as standards, assessments and memberships. Rebecca Novak is the newest member of the app development team. Hired in August as Product Owner/Software Project Manager, she is the first point of contact for all development-related enquiries, working with clients to gather job requirements and understand project goals as part of the admissions process.

Beyond development, Tech Services offers a team of web design, graphic design and printing services. Its members manage the work, including logo development and branding; production of reports, booklets and brochures; project and event materials such as posters, flyers, signs, invitations, and artwork for giveaways; social media banners and advertisements; and illustration and infographics.

Projects can contact Janet Trembley for assistance with work related to graphics and printing services, while Christine Olson manages web design and CMS-related work, as well as web accessibility assessments and quality assurance testing.
